Chimamanda Ngozi AdichieA modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides with detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, and more. For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement.
Compare and contrast your understanding of gender with Adichie’s essay. In your view, is her perception of sex, gender, and gender roles outdated in contemporary society? Or do her arguments still hold weight in discourse surrounding gender, sex, identity, and feminism?
Teaching Suggestion: Students may feel uncomfortable and/or reluctant to share their perspective with the class. In this case, this prompt may work best as either a personal analysis prompt or as a discussion in a small group setting. It may be helpful for students to first brainstorm ways that sex, gender, and gender roles are perceived by others in contemporary society so that they can more readily evaluate Adichie’s views in comparison. Both the Personal Connection Prompt and the Discussion/Analysis Prompt link with the Differentiation Suggestion in the following Activity.
