Character Analysis

Jules Ambrose

Content Warning: Twisted Hate mentions child abuse and sexual assault (involving a minor), and depicts stalking, sexual coercion and harassment (involving a minor), attempted sexual assault, dubious consent, and violence.

Jules Ambrose is one of the protagonists of Twisted Hate. She is 24 years old with red hair, hazel eyes, and generous curves. Though Jules hates the nickname, Josh calls her “JR,” short for Jessica Rabbit (an animated character known for her red hair and curves). As the pair grow close, Josh instead calls her “Red.” Jules attends Thayer Law and intends to pass her bar exam within the next few months. She already has a job offer from Silver & Klein, a prestigious law firm for which she interned.

Despite Jules’s seemingly outgoing nature, her friends don’t “know much about [her] past […] didn’t know much about her at all beyond what she showed people—the brash attitude, the brazen flirtatiousness, the strange mix of ruthless ambition and reckless partying” (42). She grew up as Jules Miller in Whittlesburg, Ohio. Her vain mother, former model Adeline, instills Beauty as a Measure of Value in her, which manifests as insecurities about appearance and worth. Adeline’s reaction to her husband Alastair’s attempted sexual assault of Jules is to kick her out, which also instills a fear of abandonment in her.
