Plot Summary

When the novel opens, Jack Sawyer is 12 years old. He and his mother have left California for the small resort of Arcadia Beach, New Hampshire. Jack’s mother, Lily Kavanaugh, is ill. A former star of B movies, her celebrity is long gone, and her illness threatens to deprive Jack of his last family member. She is hiding in New Hampshire from Jack’s uncle, Morgan Sloat. Sloat co-owns half of the company he started with Lily’s husband, Phil Sawyer. When Jack meets a janitor named Speedy Parker, he learns that he can save his mother. To do so, he must journey to the west coast, on foot, while traveling back and forth between two dimensions: his world, and an alternate reality he calls the Territories.

Speedy gives Jack a bottle of “magic juice” that helps him flip back and forth between the Territories. Because the Territories are smaller, Jack does most of his traveling there. However, as he travels, he learns that he is in more danger than he thought. Each person in Jack’s world—with few exceptions—has a “Twinner,” or double, in the Territories. Sloat’s Twinner is a despot known as Morgan of Orris (referenced as Orris in this guide). Jack learns his uncle is responsible for the death of Jack’s father.

As Jack travels, he gets caught by law enforcement. Along with his traveling companion, a werewolf named Wolf who he met in the Territories, Jack is imprisoned in the Sunlight Home, a Christian rehabilitation center run by the sadistic Sunlight Gardener. Sunlight’s Twinner, Osmond, is just as bad as he is. After escaping the Sunlight Home, Jack eventually reaches Point Venuti, the site of the Black Hotel. He and Richard Sloat defeat Sunlight Gardener, Morgan Sloat, and gain the Talisman. Jack returns to the east and heals his mother.
