Frank realizes there are some things worth dying for, a lesson he should have learned when his mother died, but he didn’t. Now he decides he must sacrifice himself to help his friends and keep Gaea from winning. He asks Hazel for his firewood. Alcyoneus confronts Hazel, telling her, Frank, and Percy that the Titans thought they could come to America and crush the gods in their new home, but Alcyoneus’s brother, Porphyrion, is preparing to attack the gods on their home turf in Greece. Hazel takes control and orders Percy to protect Frank while she takes on Alcyoneus.
Frank lights his firewood and begins melting the chains holding Thanatos. As Frank waits for all the chains to break, he thinks of everything he’s been through these last few days and everything his grandmother told him. He thinks he has a good idea now what his family gift is. When Thanatos is free, there is only a small nub of the firewood left. Frank carefully puts it away and turns to help Percy who is growing tired from fighting the legion, but Percy directs him to help Hazel who is becoming overwhelmed in her fight against Alcyoneus.
