“The World of Tomorrow”

In this activity, students will design their own society.

In The Hunger Games, Collins imagines a dystopian world. Now, it’s your turn to create a world that could be. Will your vision be dystopian or utopian, or somewhere in between?

  • Brainstorm what this world of tomorrow will be like.
  • Develop visuals of this world.
  • Write an explanation of how the world is organized and the reasoning behind these choices.
  • Create conflict in your world and list 3-5 potential reactions and outcomes that are reasonable given the rules that govern your society.
  • Compare your society to Panem, to Katniss’s district, and to the micro-setting of the Hunger Games. What societal concepts are similar? Which are very different? How do the ways in which inhabitants of both worlds think about survival compare?
  • Include all of your ideas in a slide show or other visual display.
  • Prepare to participate in a gallery walk.

Present the information on your society and view other presentations through a class gallery walk. Then, discuss what stood out to you and ideas you will continue to ponder.
