Thought & Response Prompts

These prompts can be used for in-class discussion, exploratory free-writing, or reflection homework before or after reading the book.

Pre-Reading “Icebreaker”

Think of someone you know who migrated to another country. What is your relation to this person? What were your first impressions of them as you became aware of their experience? Have your initial impressions changed since your first meeting? Why or why not?

Teaching Suggestion: This “icebreaker” can be done either as an exploratory writing activity or as a class discussion. Be sure to steer conversations away from possible harmful stereotypes.

Personal Response Prompt

Oftentimes, families who migrate to a different part of the world make financial sacrifices to support their children’s future in a new country. Think of an act of kindness that a loved one did for you that you were grateful for. What did this person do? How did you show your Gratitude for their generosity?

Teaching Suggestion: Encourage students to reflect on moments in which they experienced an act of gratitude. Students can use this prompt during a pre- or post-reading of the memoir. If introduced before, frame the discussion around how many refugee families make sacrifices for their children. If the prompt is introduced after students read the memoir, have them make direct connections with Do’s experience.
