Nan speaks with Mary Clare about the tensions between the English and the Irish. Later, Nan discovers an opening in the fence to the outside world. As she returns to work, she asks Mary Clare what she would be if she were not a nun, and Mary Clare responds by saying she would like to be a mother. As Nan mourns Bess’s loss, Mary Clare gives her a rare piece of fresh soda bread.
At night, Nan dreams of Father Joseph and is woken by Fiona, who calms her. Bess and her American husband are married before leaving for the United States, though she mourns her lost child.
In Agatha and Archie’s home, Teddy holds her toy close and watches the rain and the mill of people in it. Thompson and Archie argue over the police’s lack of success in their search. Thompson suspects Archie, though is unwillingly moved by his anguish. Archie drives away, thinking about the publicity surrounding Agatha and Doyle’s announcement that Agatha was no longer among the living. He goes to his mother’s house, who is unsympathetic. She dislikes Agatha and suggests that Archie may have been involved in her disappearance. Back at home, Archie lays down beside Teddy and cries while Teddy pretends to be asleep.
