Character Analysis

Travis Parker

Travis Parker, the novel’s male protagonist, is a 32-year-old veterinarian with a charismatic and approachable demeanor. His athletic build and warm, expressive eyes contribute to his overall charm. Travis is an adventure seeker, well-traveled, and always looking for a way to fill his time. The novel features many, if not most, of the chapters from Travis’s perspective. Travis was born and raised in Beaufort, North Carolina, where he returned after receiving an education and plans to spend the rest of his life. Travis was raised by two loving parents who play a role in taking over his veterinary clinic and childcare when Gabby falls into a coma.

Travis has a notoriously bad reputation for his inability to keep a relationship. Travis values family, friendship, and loyalty, which is evident in his close relationship with his sister, Stephanie, and his role as a compassionate caregiver for animals. He has had the same group of friends since primary school and finds himself growing along with them as they age. These enduring relationships prove that Travis values family, loyalty, and friendship, but a stable romantic relationship is missing. This speaks of his fear of commitment and lingering doubts about his ability to find the right partner.
