Plot Summary

American musician and author Jimmy Buffett’s novel A Salty Piece of Land (2004) chronicles the adventures of Tully Mars, a character first introduced in Buffett's 1989 short story collection Tales From Margaritaville. Publishers Weekly called A Salty Piece of Land "a groovily laid-back, ramblingly anecdotal, sun-soaked bit of Caribbean escapism that his Parrothead fans will relish like another chorus of 'Margaritaville.'"

In the story Take Another Road, found in the Buffett's collection Tales of Margaritaville, Wyoming native Tully Mars angers his boss, Thelma, at the poodle ranch where he works by tossing a massage table through a window. Understandably eager for revenge, Thelma sends bounty hunters Waldo Stilton and his brother Wilton Stilton to retrieve Tully. Now a fugitive, Tully takes temporary refuge in Heat Wave, Alabama where he falls for Donna Key, a waitress at the Chat n' Chew restaurant. Unable to stay in one place for long, Tully breaks up with Donna but leaves her a winning lottery ticket and a request to meet him at a specific time and date in Belize City. Reluctant to be tied down, Tully fails to arrive at the meeting place.

When A Salty Piece of Land commences, Tully travels the Florida Keys on a quarter horse named Mr. Twain. Upon teaming up with his old friend Captain Kirk, the two sail to a mysterious island known as Punta Margarita. There, Tully is invited to join the Lost Boys Fishing Lodge as a fishing guide. Early on, Tully absorbs a great deal of knowledge about the surrounding seas and beaches from Ix-Nay, a Mayan with whom he also becomes close friends.

Tully's idyllic life of fishing, sunbathing, and drinking comes to a halt when Donna unexpectedly arrives in Punta Margarita in a hot pink seaplane. She announces that she is engaged to Clark Gable, a horse trainer who also featured in Take Another Road. Tully is less disturbed by Donna's engagement than by the fact that she was able to track him down, leading him to wonder if the Stilton brothers will do the same. Donna eventually leaves, unable to extract a vow of commitment from Tully. Tully, meanwhile, becomes resigned to the fact that the people of his past—enemy and friend alike—have likely forgotten about him.

One day, Tully accidentally submerges his boss Bucky's jeep in the water. As he wanders the beach reflecting on how he plans to rectify the situation, he encounters Cleopatra Highbourne, a 101-year-old woman working to restore the Cayo Loco lighthouse. They share dinner, becoming intimate friends, but Tully rejects her offer to join the crew on her massive schooner. Instead, he returns to the Lost Boys Fishing Lodge ready to face his punishment for losing the jeep. There, he sees Ix-Nay who has a plan to travel to Belize to obtain a new Land Rover for Bucky.

There, they learn from the Land Rover's eccentric British seller Archie Mercer that the Land Rover isn't ready for purchase yet. In the interim, Tully and Ix-Nay hang out at Mercer's luxury resort, Renaldo's. While they wait, Tully associates with a lascivious teenager named Dawn. After cavorting with her for a time, Tully learns that Dawn is Thelma's stepdaughter and that Thelma and the Stilton bounty hunters are in Belize hunting for Tully. Dawn's presence there on spring break is merely a coincidence. With the help of Dawn, Mercer, and Ix-Nay, Tully escapes the clutches of Thelma and the Stilton brothers. With a tone of personal wistfulness, Tully sets out to continue his journey of self-discovery.

A Salty Piece of Land is an appropriately meandering adventure story, perfect for reading on the beach.
